A fuel filter, especially for diesel fuel, has a collecting chamber for precipitated water lying geodetically below it in the installed position. If a predetermined upper water level is reached, an indication is given indicating the need to drain off the water. The water is then drained off by opening a valve (8). In order to keep the valve (8) opened only just as long as water and not the ensuing fuel emerges therefrom, a further indication (9) is emitted at a predetermined lower water level U. The indications for the upper and lower water level can be triggered, for example, by electrodes (4) for the upper water level and (5) for the lower water level arranged inside the collecting chamber (3). It is sufficient, in the case of the electrode (5) for detecting the lower water level, if the said electrode is activated only during the opening period of the discharge valve (8). <IMAGE>
