PURPOSE: To simply and accurately measure the width of a paper money by obtaining the width of the paper money from a duration time of a detection signal indicating the presence or absence of the paper money outputted from each presence sensor while the sensor turns around an axial line as a turning center. CONSTITUTION: When a paper money 1 is in existence between opposed end faces at the tip of U-shaped legs of optical fiber cables 12A, 12B depending on a position of a rotary member 11, the light of a light emitting element 13 is shut by the paper money 1 and when no paper money 1 is in existence between the opposed end faces conversely, the light from the light emitting element 13 is received by a light receiving element 13. Then the width of the paper money 1 in a direction at a right angle to the carrying direction of the paper money 1 is calculated based on the duration time of the detection signal from each presence sensor during one revolution, on the distance between axial lines, and on the orthogonal projection component of the distance between axial lines Z in a direction at a right angle in the carrying direction within a plane of the paper money 1. |
