In a method of identifying the material of spectacle lenses for the purpose of replacing such lenses in optical businesses, provision is made to measure the refractive index of the lens. Preferably, the dioptric power of the lens to be examined is first measured in the usual way by means of a dioptric measuring device and then the dioptric power is measured with respect to a second medium, which lies right against both sides of the lens and which is bounded in a plane-parallel fashion on the outside at right angles to the optical axis. <IMAGE>
