EXAMPLE:S-4-(1-Methylheptylthio)-benzoic acid 4-octylbiphenyl ester. USE:It is used as a component of liquid crystal compositions for liquid crystal electro-optic elements, since it exhibits chiralsmectic phase and cholesteric phase. PREPARATION:The reaction between an aromatic carboxylic acid of formula VII, its reactive derivative or its corresponding anhydride and a phenolic or hetero-substituted phenolic compound of the formula; XO-A-Y, or its alkali metal or alkaline earth metal phenolate is carried out in an organic solvent in the presence of a esterification catalyst to give the compound of formula I.
