PURPOSE:To obtain a fuel oil composition, having improved stability by suppressing formation of sludge accelerated especially by exposure to light in storing, by adding a polymer, such as vinyl or vinylidene compound, to a hydrocarbon based fuel oil containing a cracked oil fraction. CONSTITUTION:The aimed composition obtained by adding about 0.002-20,000wt. ppm (especially preferably about 3-1,000wt. ppm) polymer which is a polymer of a vinyl, vinylidene or diene compound having 100,000-5,000,000 (preferably 100,000-1,000,000) mol.wt. to a hydrocarbon based fuel oil containing a cracked oil fraction. Furthermore, polymethacrylate, polyisobutylene, polyalkylstyrene, ethylene-propylene copolymer, etc., are cited as the above-mentioned polymer and especially a polymer having ester groups containing hetero-atoms., such as N, S, O or halogen, amide groups, thioether groups, chloro groups, etc., in the polymer side chains is effective.
