The invention comprises monochlorinated derivatives of tolylene 2 : 4 and 2 : 6-diisocyanate wherein the chlorine atom is in the aromatic nucleus. Compounds specified are 5-chlorotolylene 2 : 4-diisocyanate, and mixtures thereof with 3-chlorotolylene-2 : 6-diisocyanate. The compounds of the invention may be prepared by reacting tolylene 2 : 4 or 2 : 6-diisocyanate or mixtures thereof with chlorine at a temperature up to 80 DEG C. The reaction may be carried out in an inert solvent, e.g. carbon tetrachloride, and a halogen carrier such as iodine may also be present. Examples are given. 5-Chlorotolylene-2,4-di-isocyanate is converted to 5-chlorotolylene-2,4-diamine by hydrolysis.
