In a hot embossing machine (1), a sensing head (10) is arranged immediately alongside the printing unit (2) for detecting sensing marks (16) on embossing film (14) and is connected by means of a light conductor (23) to the relatively remote sensor (11) located outside the hot area; the sensing marks (16) are associated with specific print areas (15), which may carry graphic images, and the sensor controls the conveying of the film (14) for accurate positioning with respect to a receiving material. The sensor (11) is as a result protected from thermal and similar stresses and is also always readily accessible. By means of a holder (20) constructed as a compound slide, sensing head (10) can be fine adjusted in at least two directions at right angles to one another. In order that the distance between embossing film (14) and sensing head (10) can be very precisely established, there is a countersupport (41) immediately adjacent to the sensing head (10) and the printing unit (2). <IMAGE>
