Expandable and retractable shaft for positioning and gripping spindles over which are wound materials in the form of a web (sheet), of the multi-strip and multi-bladder type, which includes a series of T-shaped continuous grooves made over the entire length of the shaft, each groove receiving an inflatable bladder and an associated expansion strip shifted radially by the expansion of the said bladder, so as to grip the spindle, the said T-shaped grooves emerging on the side of the shaft enabling each assembly constituted by a bladder and its associated strip to be inserted via the side, this shaft being characterised in that its body, including the said T-shaped grooves 16, is extruded directly without it being necessary to carry out a milling or machining operation. <IMAGE>
