The invention relates to a process for producing 4-phenoxyphenoxyalkanecarboxylic acid derivatives of formula Ia <IMAGE> in which R1 is an alkyl residue and R2 is a hydroxyl, alcohol, amino or -OM residue (M being an alkali metal). According to the invention, 2,4-dichlorophenol or its alkali metal phenoxide is reacted, under basic conditions, with a halogenated derivative of formula II <IMAGE> in the presence of a catalyst and optionally in an inert organic solvent to give a compound of formula Ib <IMAGE> where R1 has the same meaning as in the case of the compound Ia and R2 is a hydroxyl or alcohol residue, which can be easily converted to derivatives of formula Ia. The invention applies especially to the preparation of herbicidal products.
