PURPOSE:To obtain a multicolor image of >=3 colors which maintains sufficient density in a single print cycle by controlling the driving of respective means so that respective processes of electrostatic charging, image exposure, and development are repeated plural times for a specific area according to color signals. CONSTITUTION:When an image signal S is supplied as original image information, a control circuit 18 reads in and analyzes it, and when it is judged that the specific area of an electrostatic latent image formed on an image carrier needs to be developed by using developers of >=2 colors repeatedly, the circuit outputs a yellow signal SY, a magenta signal SM, and a cyan signal SC to optical modulators 13-15 respectively. Then the driving of the respective means is controlled so that the respective processes of electrostatic charging, image exposure, and development are repeated plural times for the specific area according to the color signals S, thereby obtaining a multicolor image in a single print cycle. Consequently, the multicolor image of >=3 colors having sufficient density is obtained.
