PURPOSE:To obtain a potassium titanate fiber, having excellent homogeneity and useful as heat-resistant, reinforcing materials, etc., in good yield, by disintegrating a heat-treated substance consisting of specific crystal grains, blending the powdery disintegrated substance with TiO2 powder and firing the resultant blend. CONSTITUTION:A blend obtained by blending a Ti compound, such as synthetic rutile, with a K compound, such as K2CO3, so as to provide 1.5-2.5 molar ratio (TiO2/K2O) and the resultant blend is melted at 950-1,100 deg.C while heating, quenched at >=10<6> deg.C/sec cooling rate, etc., to afford an amorphous solidified substance (A) in the form of foil-like pieces. The obtained component (A) is then heat-treated at 500-900 deg.C for >=3min to provide K2O.2TiO2 crystal grains (B) having 2-15mum grain diameter. The component (B) is subsequently disintegrated in water to provide fine grains, which are then dried at 110-250 deg.C to afford powdery disintegrated substance (C) having 2-10mum grain diameter. The component (C) is subsequently blended with TiO2 powder so as to provide 3-6 molar ratio of TiO2/K2O and the resultant power blend is subjected to firing treatment at 800-1,200 deg.C for about 30min to afford the aimed potassium titanate fiber, such as single fiber.
