PURPOSE:To harden the rugged pattern forming surface of a stamper and to extend the life of the stamper by providing a nitrided layer to the rugged pattern forming surface. CONSTITUTION:The nitrided layer 3 of metal to constitute the stamper is formed on at least the rugged pattern forming surface of the stamper 1 for an optical recording medium. Since the rugged pattern forming surface of the metal stamper 1 is thus hardened, the rugged patterns have a less tendency to deterioration in shape at the time of transfer of signal patterns. As a result, the number of the optical recording media which can be reproduced by a sheet of the stamper is increased and the production cost of the optical recording media is reduced.
