PURPOSE:To realize a production system having high capacity by providing a rule memory part storing the production rules, a working memory part storing the working information, a stack storing the information on the working memory part, and an inference control part which controls said parts and stack. CONSTITUTION:A working memory part 1 is provided together with a rule memory part 2, a stack 3 storing the information on the part 1, an inference control part 4, and an interface 5 to outside. When a user is not satisfied with a conclusion and another conclusion is required, the state of a working memory WME9 is reversibly reset by the information stored in the stack 3. Then a production system uses the second best one of those rules selected previously by the WME9 to continue the inference. Thus the system repeats the inference until the user is satisfied or a back track is impossible. Thus the reversible execution (back tracking) is attained.
