PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance, by dimerizing propylene in the presence of a catalyst prepared by supporting an alkali metal on an anhydrous potassium carbonate carrier and by adding an alcohol, phenol, amine, ether or ketone having a specific number of carbons to the reaction system. CONSTITUTION:In obtaining the titled substance by dimerizing propylene, the reaction is carried out at 100-200 deg.C under 30-200kg/cm<2> in the presence of a catalyst prepared by supporting 1-5wt.% alkali metal (preferably Na or K) on an anhydrous potassium carbonate carrier by adding one or more compounds selected from 1-10C alcohols, 6-10C phenols, 3-30C amines, 2-20C ethers and 3-20C ketones (preferably one or more selected from aliphatic alcohol, aliphatic tertiary amine and alicyclic amine) to give the aimed substance while suppressing formation of 4-methyl-2-pentene as a by-product. The reaction may be carried out by batch system or flow system.
