The device is for testing a photovoltaic installation 10. A DC supply 16 connected to a control unit 28 sends a time-varying short-circuit current Isc into the generator under test 10. The generator 10 is then the seat of a voltage V which is applied to an external unit 26. The generator 10 is placed in a temperature-controlled dark room 12. Knowing how the short-circuit current Isc varies with insolation, the operation of the generator 10 and the external unit 26 can be simulated in terms of the insolation and the temperatures they will have to undergo. Application to testing, at the place of manufacture, a photovoltaic installation intended for use elsewhere. <IMAGE>
