This invention relates to an agent for the adsorption of lipophilic toxic substances, which is characterised by a partial alkylation or arylation of water-soluble polymers with a molecular weight above 500 Dalton. The partial alkylation or arylation of the polymers results in the agent also being osmotically active during or after adsorption of lipophilic toxic substances in aqueous solutions, and thus reabsorption of previously absorbed toxic substances can take place.
