An apparatus for displacing long wood during longitudinal cutting by means of band saws is proposed. The apparatus has, in a known manner, a narrow, rigid wood-holding device 7 perpendicular to the cutting plane of the band saws, a clamping device 12, 14 for firmly clamping the wood 2 with respect to the holding device 7 and a mechanical drive 8, 9c for moving the holding device 7 to and fro between a position in front of the band saws and a position behind them. According to the invention, the holding device 7 consists of a low, rail-like beam which is supported 6 movably from below and guided sideways, and the clamping device 12, 14 is mounted and guided separately from this beam. The advantage obtained consists in that the holding device 7 has only a comparatively small mass and nevertheless ensures precise wood guidance during sawing, and in that the apparatus does not obstruct the wood at the end faces, so that a middle cut is also possible. <IMAGE>
