For example, the absolute value of the crest value of the voltage which impresses a difference between the scanning voltage VX and the signal voltage VY to the liquid crystal layer and is impressed on the liquid crystal layer in the non-selection period is the synthesized waveform of the AC voltages Vac1 and Vac2(VH) in which the absolute value of the crest value is VO and the pulse width is equal to the pulse width of the signal voltage. The maintenance characteristic thereof is thereby greatly improved.
