PURPOSE:To transmit the existing position of an EOL code by constituting the titled encoder so that a processor outputs the value of the number of EOL codes together with a modified Hofmann code when the number of EOL codes generated by a coding circuit reaches the prescribed number. CONSTITUTION:When the number of EOL codes generated by the coding circuit 2 comes equal to the, number of codes written in a memory 7 by the processor 8, numerical values generated by subtracting twelve from the bit length of a modified Hofmann code outputted from a subtractor 5 are written sequentially in a memory 11. The processor 8 is capable of reading these numerical values sequentially through a signal line (o). These values written in the memory 11 represent the bit position of an EOL code. Therefore, when reading out a series of modified Hofmann codes stored in a memory circuit 12 through a signal line (i) and transmitting to the signal line (i), the processor 8 can also transmit the position of an EOL code.
