PURPOSE:To seek to shorten preparation time by treating the time when a wire electrode contacts with an upper or lower wire contact detector as the end face of a substance to be processed. CONSTITUTION:A X-Y axis wire contact detecting terminal 9, when a wire electrode 3 contacts with a lower detector 7, and a U-V axis wire contact detecting terminal 10, when the electrode 3 contacts with an upper detector 6, detect the contacts and output signals to a controller respectively regarding as equipotential with a processing table. A short circuit detecting terminal 11 outputs a signal to handle detectors 6, 7 as the end face of the substance to be processed to the controller when the electrode 3 contacts with each detector 6, 7. And the vertical degree of the electrode 3 is sought and the position where the electrode 3 contacts with the detector 7 is memorized by shifting the U axis by +e and the X axis in the direction and the position where the electrode 3 contacts the detector 6 is memorized by shifting the X axis in such a degree that the electrode 3 doesn't contact with the detector 7 in the +direction and shifting the U axis until it becomes -e and shifting the X axis in one direction, and then the calculation is performed in the controller on the basis of the above mentioned measured values and the compensation amount is obtained.
