A hydraulic valve clearance adjusting element in a valve gear, especially in an internal combustion engine, is described, with an inner piston and an outer piston encompassing the former, which are guided so as to be longitudinally displaceable in one another with tight leakage gap at operating temperature and which with one another define an oil pressure chamber adjacent to the leakage gap. In order to achieve rapid gas venting of the oil pressure chamber even when the valve clearance adjusting element is cold and the oil in the chamber thereby viscous, the inner piston is composed of a material which has an essentially higher coefficient of thermal expansion than the material of the outer piston, so that the leakage gap in the cold state is essentially wider than in the warmed-up state, thereby allowing oil and gas to flow out of the oil pressure chamber.
