The invention provides a process for the preparation of 2-hydroxy-5-¢1-hydroxy-2-¢1-methyl-3-phenylpropyl))amino!ethyl} benzamlde of the formula ( I ) and pharmaceutlcally acceptable acld addltion salts thereof which comprises hydrogenating 2-hydroxy-5-{1-hydroxy-2-¢(1-phenyl-but-1-ene-3-ylldene)lmlno!ethyl}benzamlde of the formula (V) and, if desired, converting the compound of the formula I thus obtained into a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt. The present invention also provides a compound of the formula V .
