Benzoyl carbinol is prepared by hydrolysing the ester, Ph.CO.CH 2 .O.CO.Me, which is itself obtained by treating acetophenone with bromine and potassium acetate. Pharmaceutical preparations suitable for treating viral infections and depression contain I as active ingredient; administration is orally or parenterally.
