In a compact belt filter, at least one rotatably mounted pressing roll 44 and 46 is provided, which presses the filter belt 36 against a mesh support belt 28 at least in the central area between its side edges. This prevents the filter belt from drawing in towards the centre and its side edges no longer lying tightly against the discs 25 and 26, which, together with the filter belt 36, form a trough-shaped filter area open at the top. The compact belt filter is preferably used for purifying the drawing compound in the case of wire drawing machines or for purifying the cooling liquid in the case of honing or grinding machines. As a result of the better guiding of the filter belt, this can be utilised more effectively and larger and wider filter apparatuses can also be produced without losses in reliability. <IMAGE>
