PURPOSE:To improve the reproducibility of thin lines and to obtain an image of good quality by specifying the no-image part potential and developing bias DC component of an image support body, forming a developing gap of prescribed size, and setting those values to prescribed values. CONSTITUTION:This is a noncontact developing means which uses a two- component developer forming a thin layer on a developing sleeve to develop a latent image on the image support body 1 in the presence of an oscillating electric field. Then an equation I holds, where VH is the no-image part potential of the image support body 1, VAC(VP-P) the AC component of a developing bias, n(kHz) the bias frequency, VB the bias DC component, and Hmm the developing gap. In the equation, K is a constant having dimensions of (kHz.mm). Consequently, the influence of an electric field at an image edge part is reduced and excellent image quality which is improved in the reproducibility of thin lines, etc., is obtained.
