PURPOSE:To reduce the weight and size of a camera main body and make the moving speed and shape of its slit controllable, by constituting a focal plane shutter by using a self-scanning type liquid crystal shutter. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal shutter array is constituted of NXM pieces of shutters, with the N pieces being in the horizontal direction and M pieces being in the vertical direction, and the number of the liquid crystal shutters is determined in accordance with the number of image pickup elements to be combined. The clock to cause the shutter array 1 to make self-scanning is inputted to a liquid crystal shutter array 1 from a slit moving clock generator 2 through an input signal line and CLK.IN. Moreover, M pieces of data for determining the slit shape and its transmittance are inputted to the shutter array 1 from an ND controlling section 4 through a signal line DIN. Therefore, an optional slit shape can be obtained and the transmittance of the slit at an optional position of the liquid crystal shutter array can be controlled when the pulse amplitude of the clock signal DIN is controlled by means of the ND controller 4.
