The invention relates to a shelf system having ladder-shaped side elements, between which shelves are fixed. To avoid visible holes, slots, recesses or the like on the front of the side elements, for attaching the fittings for fastening the shelves, provision is made for the holes or recesses to be made on both uprights of the ladder-shaped side elements on the side thereof facing the wall. For the rear upright, fittings are used which are of U-shaped construction with unequal-length legs, the shorter leg of which is inserted rearwardly into the rearward-facing bore or recess of the upright, the longer leg of the fitting extending, running laterally beside the upright, until it engages in a bore on the rear edge of the respective shelf. The front edge of the shelf is supported by straight supporting pins which engage in bores or the like on the rear side of the front upright.
