A training device for developing and strengthening the muscles and joints of a person training by means of backwards and forwards movements under load produces these movements by means of a reversible electric motor (20) which can be braked beyond a standstill and whose terminal voltage can be controlled in an infinitely variable fashion by means of a control device (60) and whose power output torque can be converted by means of a transmission (28, 30) into a linear force which stresses the person training. Expediently, the motor (20) is a direct current motor with shunt characteristic and has a stator with permanently magnetic pulse. The training device according to the invention permits the load to be adapted in a simple, individual way to the person training and to the exercise to be carried out, possibly with preprogramming. <IMAGE>
