PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound inexpensively, by carrying out bromination of benzene fluoride, esterification with carbon monoxide and an alkali metallic salt of phenol and further rearrangement reaction by using benzene fluoride, carbon monoxide and the alkali metallic salt, as simple compounds. CONSTITUTION:Benzene fluoride is reacted with a brominating agent consisting of bromine and/or molecular oxygen and hydrogen bromide to give p- bromofluorobenzene, which is then reacted with carbon monoxide and an alkali metal salt of a phenol shown by formula I (R<1>-R<4> are H, alkyl, alkoxy, etc.; M is alkali metal) containing no substituent group on the p-position in the presence of a carbonylation catalyst to give a p-fluorobenzoic acid phenyl ester, which is then subjected to rearrangement reaction in the presence of an acid catalyst to give a 4-(p-fluorobenzoyl)phenol shown by formula II.
