PURPOSE:To obtain a photographic sensitive material having superior shelf stability, superior graininess and sharpness by using a specified compound. CONSTITUTION:A compound represented by formula I is used. In the formula, each of R1-R3 is H or an alkali cleavable group, R4 is an electron withdrawing substituent having >=0.3 Hammett's substituent constant sigmap, R5 is a substituent substitutable on the benzene ring, n=0 or 1 and DI is a development retarder or a precursor thereof. The compound is effective in improving the photographic performance such as the sharpness of a black-and-white photographic sensitive material having a silver iodobromide or chloroiodobromide emulsion layer contg. 0-50mol% silver chloride and <=15mol% silver iodide on one side or both sides of the support, especially an X-ray sensitive material. A concrete example of the compound is represented by formula I-1.
