The invention relates to a fibre optical component and a method for producing it. The starting point is this case a rod-shaped preform into which semicircular depressions are countersunk (at right angles to the longitudinal direction) and reach as far as the core region. This rod-shaped preform is drawn out to form an optical fibre which alternately has a circular and a semicircular cross-section. A polariser is now produced in the latter region by applying the coating or coating sequence required for operation, e.g. a CaF2-metal coating sequence.
