PURPOSE:To simplify a welding work, and to reduce a connection loss by forming first and second tapers in first and second optical fibers. CONSTITUTION:A local heating device 2 for welding an optical fiber is provided in the center of an optical fiber welding machine 1. On the right and left of this device 2, soft clamp mechanisms 4a, 4b for clamping the first and the second optical fibers 3a, 3b by a clamp force of the extent that they can move finely only in the axial direction of the optical fibers 3a, 3b are provided. In this state, the optical fibers 3a, 3b on first and second moving bases 6a, 6b are welded without executing an axial alignment by a special mechanism, and thereafter, when the moving bases 6a, 6b are moved with a prescribed speed difference (acceleration difference) in the same direction by a control part 7 by operating the device 2, the first and the second tapers are formed in the optical fibers 3a, 3b. In this way, without executing a precise axial alignment of the optical fibers 3a, 3b, welding of a low loss can be easily executed. |
