PURPOSE:To improve a compression ratio in a bit plane method by spliting image data into unit data train and selecting compression or noncompression based on the number of inverted bits in respective unit data train and the length of continuous bits. CONSTITUTION:A unit data splitter 12 splits the image data 1 stored in an image data storage device 11 into unit data 2 and stores said data in a unit data storage device 13. Simultaneously the unit data 2 is transmitted to an inversion counter 14 and a bit string length storage device 15. Inverted bits are counted, and the length of each bit string is stored. According to the number of inverted bits and said length, data selector 17 selects compression or noncompression, and a data compression means 16 compresses data according to the bit plane method. The compressed data is stored in a compressed data storage device 18 as generally compressed digital image data. |
