PURPOSE:To produce compound single crystal having desired orientation readily, by inserting single crystal having desired orientation into a pocket at the bottom of an ampul, packing polycrystal into the main body of the ampul, setting the ampul at a specific position in a furnace and growing single crystal. CONSTITUTION:A seed crystal bar having desired orientation is inserted into a pocket part set in a communicated way at the tip of ampul bottom, polycrystal or a raw material thereof is fed to the main body of the ampul, the ampul is evacuated and sealed. Then the ampul is set at a position to melt the top of seed crystal but not the bottom in a furnace. In order to set the ampul, the ampul is held in such a way that a position at the bottom end of the pocket is lower than a position which is obtained by measuring temperature at the bottom end of the pocket in the furnace by the use of a similar ampul, located at the bottom of the pocket and melts the compound. After part of the top of the seed crystal and the whole polycrystal are melted, the ampul is gradually cooled from the tip part to grow single crystal. Compound single crystal having desired orientation is readily obtained.
