PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high purity, by catalytically reducing styrene oxide in the presence of a catalyst and an alkaline cocatalyst, recovering the catalyst from the crude reaction liquid, removing the catalyst and the cocatalyst by simple distillation and further fractionating the distillate. CONSTITUTION:Styrene oxide is reduced in the presence of a catalytic reduction catalyst and an alkaline cocatalyst and the obtained crude reaction liquid containing beta-phenetyl alcohol is purified by distillation. The distillation is carried out by separating and recovering the catalyst from the crude reaction liquid e.g. by decantation, separating and removing trace catalyst and cocatalyst by simple distillation and further fractionating the distillate. beta-Phenetyl alcohol useful as a rose-type perfumery for cosmetics or detergents can be produced by this process in high purity and yield while suppressing the by-production of styrene and phenyl acetaldehyde during the fractionation process.
