PURPOSE:A tertiary recovering chemical for petroleum, consisting of high-mol.wt. copolymer powder consisting of (meth)acrylamide, specific anionic vinyl monomer and specific water-soluble amphoteric vinyl monomer and having improved mechanical shear deterioration characteristics in a porous medium and oil layer. CONSTITUTION:A tertiary recovering chemical for petroleum consisting of a high-mol.wt. polymer powder containing (A) acrylamide and/or methacrylamide, (B) an anionic vinyl monomer consisting of an acrylate or methacrylate and/or 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonate and (C) a water-soluble amphoteric vinyl monomer (mixture) expressed by the formula (R1 is H or methyl; R2 and R3 are lower alkyl; m and n are integers of 1-3).
