PURPOSE:To make the sufficient mixing of air with fuel possible by forming the curvature of the inner periphery of a combustion chamber located on an upgrade inclined surface of a swirl on a piston crown surface in a small dimension. CONSTITUTION:The curvature R2 of the inner periphery of a combustion chamber 3 located on the upgrade inclined surface 6a, 7a of a swirl S on inclined surfaces 6, 7 is established less than the curvature of the inner periphery of the combustion chamber 3 located on downgrade inclined surfaces 6b, 7b. Therefore the height of the inner periphery wall of the combustion chamber 3 on the upgrade inclined surfaces 6a, 7a is cut off so much that it becomes lower than its corresponding height on the downgrade inclined surfaces 6b, 7b to form an introducing port 8 for the swirl S. Therefore, the swirl Sa can easily flow into the combustion chamber 3, and hardly damp. In addition to that, since the height hc of the inner periphery wall just behind the swirl Sa flowing into the said chamber is high, the swirl Sa can not freely get out of the combustion chamber 3 after it has once flown into there, and squish Q is pressed in through the introducing port 8 at the end of compression stroke to strengthen the swirl Sa.
