NEW MATERIAL:A 1,2,4-triazolin-5-one shown by formula I (R is lower haloalkyl). EXAMPLE:1-(2-Chlorophenyl)-4-difluoromethyl-3-methyl-DELTA<2>-1,2,4-tr iazolin-5-one. USE:An intermediate for producing agricultural chemicals. PREPARATION:A compound shown by formula IV is reacted with equimolar amount of a compound shown formula III (X is Cl, Br or I) or a compound shown by formula II (Y is halogen) or an excess amount of 1.4-2.0mol based on the compound shown by formula IV of the compound shown by formula II or formula III in an inert solvent or in the absence of solvent in the presence of a base such as anhydrous K2CO3, etc., at room temperature - the boiling point of the solvent for 2-10hr to give a compound shown by formula I. When the reaction is carried out in an organic solvent or in an aqueous solvent, a phase transfer catalyst such as tetra-n-butyl-ammonium bromide, etc., is also usable.
