<p>PURPOSE:To conveniently and efficiently recover Ir from a recovered material by introducing gaseous Cl2 while heating the recovered material contg. Ir and the oxide of the base metal in the presence of carbon or CO to convert the oxide of the base metal into the chloride, and evaporating and separating the chloride. CONSTITUTION:The recovered material contg. Ir or its oxide and the oxide of the base metal is mixed with carbon, the mixture 1 is charged in a chloride forming vessel 4, and gaseous Cl2 is introduced from an inlet pipe 5 through glass fiber 3 at the bottom of the vessel 1 while heating the material at 400-1,200 deg.C by an electric furnace 2. Consequently, the Ir or its oxide and the oxide of the base metal are converted into the chlorides. When the heating temp. is controlled to a temp. higher than the dissociation or decomposition temp. of Ir chloride and higher than the b.P. of the chloride of the base metal, metallic Ir is formed, and the chloride of the base metal is simultaneously evaporated, separated, and transferred to a collection tank 7 through a cooling pipe 7. On the other hand, when the heating temp. is controlled to a temp. lower than the dissociation or decomposition temp. of Ir chloride, the evaporated Ir chloride is heated to a specified temp. by a heater 9 provided to an evaporation duct 6, and Ir is recovered as metal.</p> |
