ENVELOPE PRINTING IN DOT MATRIX PRINTER

A compact dot matrix printer having a paper drum (22) capable of handling 8 1/2 inch wide sheets of paper. Prints on 9 1/2 inch wide envelopes (34) by feeding the envelopes into the printer lengthwise, storing lines of character data to be printed on the envelope in an envelope print buffer (40), reading character data out one column at a time, and rotating the dot matrix pattern for each character by 90 DEG before printing the character.
