A composite membrane comprises a porous inorganic e.g. alumina membrane and a permeable or microporous polymer film overlying a face thereof. The porous membrane may be an anodic oxide membrane preferably one which is asymmetric by virtue of a system of larger pores extending in from one face and interconnecting with a system of smaller pores extending in from the other face, with the polymer film overlying the small pore face. The polymer film may be one applied by plasma polymerisation or interfacial polymerisation or by a Langmuir-Blodgett technique.
