The appts. includes a circuit responsive to the luminance part of the video signal for generating a signal indicative of the contour lines of picture images. A second circuit responsive to the chrominance signal generates a second signal including noise of the chrominance part with a component having an amplitude equal to the peak-to-peak value of the noise of the chrominance signal. A switching circuit is responsive to the two signals and switches between the second signal and a DC voltage in response to the first signal for producing a noise-only signal.
