A monitoring system for line networks is described in which fault messages are transmitted via a back channel of a line network to a sub-station and in which the sub-station provides the fault message with a code to identify the fault location, processes all the information for transmission via the public telephone network, automatically sets up a connection and transmits the message to a remote central device. In a known monitoring system with these features, the central devices are housed in a workstation of a central operation-monitoring position; each central device is connected to its own printer. In order to save space and reduce costs, a plurality of central devices are connected to a basic unit which, controlled by a computer unit, can exchange information with each of the central devices via multiplexers and demultiplexers, the basic unit contains chips which process the data received from the central devices for a printer, a computer and a remote operating device and conversely process information received from the printer, computer and operating device via the computer unit, and the operating device has a display unit, a keyboard and a control unit. |
