PURPOSE:To suppress foaming in distillation and efficiently recover the titled unreacted compound, by adding an alkaline earth metal compound to an aqueous mixture, obtained by oxidizing an alkylphenol in an aqueous solvent using a surfactant and containing the surfactant and distilling the resultant mixture. CONSTITUTION:An alkylphenol is oxidized in an aqueous solvent using a surfactant, e.g. fatty acid soap, alkylsulfonate, etc., to give an oxidation reaction product, e.g. 3,3,5,5'-tetramethyl-4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl, etc. In the process, an alkaline earth metal compound, particularly a calcium or magnesium compound in an amount of 0.5-5wt% based on the total amount of the aqueous mixture is added to carry out distillation and recover the unreacted 2,6-dialkylphenol.
