On a one-line display or on a screen, for a given separation between characters, only a specified, fixed number of graphic characters or symbols can be displayed. If it is necessary to display more than the given number of characters during text editing, the text scrolls to the left many times, so that it is no longer visible in full. This makes text processing or formatting very difficult. The way this problem is eliminated using the invention is that the text length of a text which is intended for one line on the display (11) is compared in a text data memory with the line length of the display (11), which may extend over several lines, and if the text length exceeds the line length, it is made smaller, until the text length is at least equal to the line length of the display (11). This ensures that all the characters of a line are visible to the operator, which greatly simplifies text editing. Also, horizontal scrolling of the text during editing is no longer required. <IMAGE>
