The invention relates to a washing and rinsing apparatus for cleaning vessels and devices, for example for emptying, rinsing and washing bedpans containing large amounts of waste. The apparatus comprises a washing and/or rinsing chamber (1), a water tank (2), one or more valves (28, 29) for introducing water from the mains supply into the apparatus, a pump (11) for circulating water in the apparatus, an odour trap (3) by means of which the washing and/or rinsing chamber (1) is connected to a sewer channel (18), a relatively large opening (4) with a shut-off element (5) being arranged in the base of the washing and/or rinsing chamber (1), by means of which opening (4) the washing and/or rinsing chamber (1) is connected to the odour trap (3). The washing and/or rinsing chamber (1) and the water tank (2) are connected, via openings (7, 8), to an intermediate chamber (6) which is positioned approximately at the same level as the base of the washing and/or rinsing chamber (1) and below the water tank (2). Said openings (7, 8) are provided with shut-off elements (9, 10). The intermediate chamber (6) is connected, via the pump (11) and a pipe (12), to the washing and/or rinsing chamber (1), preferably to its upper part. <IMAGE>
