PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high purity and yield with easy operation, by adding bromine to a suspension composed of 1,4-bis(dicyanomethylene)-cyclohexane, an aromatic amine and a nitrile while keeping the suspension at a low temperature lower than a specific level. CONSTITUTION:A suspension composed of 1,4-bis(dicyanomethylene)-cyclohexane, an aromatic amine (especially preferably pyridine, alpha-picoline, beta-picoline, gamma- picoline, aniline, quinoline or their mixture) and a nitrile (especially preferably acetonitrile) is maintained at <=5 deg.C, preferably -5-+5 deg.C and added with bromine to obtain the objective 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane. Preferably, the reaction mixture is aged at <=20 deg.C after the addition of bromine.
