PURPOSE:To obtain foam glass having excellent impact strength, machinability and scratch resistance, by covering at least one surface of a foamed layer with a skin layer having high bulk density and specific structure and integrating the foamed layer with the skin layer. CONSTITUTION:The objective foam glass is produced by integrating a foamed layer with a skin layer having higher bulk density than the foamed layer and covering at least one surface of the foamed layer. The skin layer is composed of a matrix phase consisting of fine glass powder or a mixture of fine glass powder and fine inorganic pigment powder contacting with each other and containing glass particles of 0.5-5.2mm in diameter dispersed in the matrix phase. The amount of the glass particles in the skin layer is 15-30vol%. The bulk densities of the foamed layer and the skin layer are preferably 0.3-0.6 and 0.8-1.7, respectively. The foamed glass produced by this process has remarkably excellent properties such as impact strength, flexural strength, scratch resistance, machinability, etc., and can be effectively applied as an interior or exterior material or external wall material of buildings.
