An economical torsion bar unit (10) with less likelihood of failure at the extremes of torsion. At least one torsion bar (32) secured in and extending between a torque hub (18) and a stationary hub (36). The torsion bar (32) typically has a circular cross-section in its intermediate portion spaced from its end. The torsion bar ends define at least one flat, lateral portion (46) and are fitted into apertures (30, 38), either of which may be made of sintered metal powder. A space exists between the lateral walls of the torsion bar ends and the apertures they occupy, and a key member (48) is forcefully inserted in this space to provide compressive retention of the torsion bar ends. Also, a rotation limiter plate (50) may be used. |
