OSCILLATORY DRIVE MECHANISMS

An oscillatory drive (12) mechanism is adapted to be coupled to a machine component (22) to be oscillated or reciprocated, for example the needle bar (22) of a tufting machine. The mechanism comprises a unidirectional stepwise drive (11) coupled to an oscillatory-movement imparting cam (21) means adapted to be coupled to the machine component (22) to be oscillated or reciprocated through the intermediary of a change gearwheel system (20). The cam means is a single revolution linear displacement cam. The change gearwheel system (20) may include a switching clutch (15A, 16A) to permit multiple stroke operation if desired or required.
